A small group of Hamilton County Deputies, led by Sheriff Morton Lytle Hawkins, saved the jail from a complete takeover and successfully protected the lives of all the inmates. WebCincinnati saw a series of riots in which white mobs attacked Black residents and destroyed their homes, stores and personal property. On the afternoon of Friday, September 3, 1841 a white mob lead by Kentucky toughs headed toward the heart of the Black community at Sixth and Broadway.
