Using administrative tax and patent data for the population of US patent inventors from 1996 to 2012, we find that an inventor’s premature death causes a large and long-last-ing decline in their co-inventor’s earnings and citation-weighted patents (−4 percent and −15 percent after 8 years, respectively). Webbased on the citation history at a given moment has the largest impact. (iv) Self-citations (i.e., those coming from down-the-line patents owned by the same firm) are more valuable than citations coming from external patents, but this effect decreases with the size of patent portfolio held by the firm, as might be expected.
